Hi,

Trying to establish VPN connection between two XP Pro systems but always got
the following error message: Error 651: The modem (or other connection
device) has reported a problem.

Searching the net and MS KB did not help much as seems most people got this
error has not resolved the problem.

This error is based on using PPTP VPN. If using Automatic VPN type, error
800 then will come out.

Network service installed are: TCP/IP, File & Printer Sharing, QoS Packet
Scheduler, Client for Microsoft Network

Thanks for your advice

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

I believe we opened the port 1723 but I will check again since I am not near
the router at this time.

If TCP port 1723 is needed also for remote desktop, I then am very sure that
we opened it.

I can use remote desktop to connect to the other system but cannot use
build-in VPN.

One more question, does this error message have anything to do with DSL
modem and/or router as it suggested?

Many thanks.

as the link case mentioned, the port is open but it didn't point to vpn server correctly. It could be the router issue too.

Hi,

Thanks.

The case says, point to the Windows Server, does it literally mean Windows server as Windows 2003 server and older server operating systems, or does it mean the system that is configured to accept VPN connection which in our case is a Windows XP Pro machine?

If it's for server OS, I don't have in this case and all I wish is to connect two XP Pro system with VPN.

If it meant for the system serves as VPN host (which could be an XP pro machine), I have confirmed the port has been forwarded to the system.

I am not sure if the logic is correct or not, but I use the very same port forwarding for the system to accept remote desktop session. In this case, if the system can accept remote desktop session, it should indicate that the port has been opened and the IP address has been forwarded??

Can I ask a simple and fundamental question about the general router's configuration?

What is the basic difference between using NAT (network address translation) and routing? Should I enter any routing information for VPN?
