I am trying to setup a VPN to allow access to an XP machine on the local side
of a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and am having trouble.
The configuration is as follows:
- Router is hooked via cable modem to internet. Router is configured with
DHCP from the cable modem. Router has PPTP pass through enabled.
- Have setup a dynamic host name with DYNDNS.ORG called
cmconsult.dynalias.com. Router is configured to automatically update the
SYNDNS.ORG of the IP address for the internet side.
- XP machine (with all updates) connected using a wired connection to the
54G has the VPN server setup according to instructions. I have turned off
allowing access to the local network since the files I want to allow access
are on the same machine as the VPN server. The machine uses DHCP. The host
name has been confiugred as cmconsult and the primary suffix has been setup
as dynalias.com (the check box on changing primary DNS suffix on changing of
domains is off).
I can connect to the machine using a VPN connection with my laptop with the
XP VPN client on the local side of the network. However trying from the
Internet side I get Error 800. Pinging the cmconsult.dynalias.com from the
internet side I get a response and correct resolution into the router's
Internet side IP address. I can ping from the local side using just the
cmconsult host name.
Any pointers and information would be helpful.
