Volume metre?

I'm using Realtek High Def Audio Drivers on an HP Pavilion running Windows
Home Premium. I recently updated the drivers and it seems that
coincidentally, the volume metres in the volume control on the taskbar have
disappeared. That is to say, if I right click on the volume icon and select
either 'playback' or 'recording' devices, the small green volume meters that
are normally present to the right of each icon are missing.

HP service has been of no help. I've already tried rolling back the driver
to the original, which did nothing. I also have system restore turned off,
as it uses way too much hard drive space, so that isn't an option.

Small issue, but one that I would like to resolve, if at all possible.

Try updating the driver and point to the old driver.
