Volume issues with audio/video

I'm running Windows 2000 SP 4. Realplayer 10.0 Winamp 5.0, WM 9.0.
If I play an audio or video clip in Windows Media or Winamp, the volume is
very low.
Only once I 1) start Real Player, and 2) jiggle the Real Player volume
slider,
does the volume jump to full range.
Then I can control the volume in the running player.

Can anyone explain what is going on or how to fix it?

To be precise, I have to move the Real Player volume to full, then I can get
the range in the other player.
Thanks.
