Each time I boot up WinXP home, I get:

Volume is NTFS
Volume name is Swap File (I named it that, F: drive of 4GB)
Volume is dirty

XP then does scandisk thru 3 operations and then boots normally.
What is a dirty volume, no puns please, and how to fix?

Rod:

The volume's dirty bit has been set possibly due to a file system
inconsistency.

Logon as Admin gp member via Safe Mode boot.
Open a command prompt session.
Run chkntfs f:
That should report: "F: is dirty"

Run chkdsk f: /f
Should prompt you to schedule a check for the next restart.
Press Y key for yes.

During next bootup, you should see an ASCII character screen re: checking
disk F:
Actually, this is what you may be seeing during your current bootups, and
you are referring to it "scandisk".

If the previous steps do solve the problem, you might create the swap file
on another vol, reformat F:, put the swap file back on F:
(also check that F: does not have any files in it before you reformat)
