Volume Icon missing - a challenge to you all!

OK, I read through all the posts I could find on the volume icon missing from
the system tray.

I am using XP Pro with SP2 and have all updates installed as of Dec 30,
2005. This is what I have done:

A) Go to Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Volume Tab
under Device Volume, put a check in the box that reads: Place volume icon in
the taskbar.

B) expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

C) expand powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32\powrprof.dll
Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 stobject.dll

Then editted the registry with these settings:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"SystemTray"="SysTray.Exe"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Nla]
"Start"=dword:00000002

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netman]
"Start"=dword:00000002

D) Made sure Hide Inactive is disabled in Taskbar Properties.

E) Right-click the taskbar & select Task Manager under Processes tab select
Explorer.Exe & End Task. Under Applications tab select New Task, type in
"explorer" and click OK.

And, after all is said and done, when I check taskmanager after every step,
and several reboots, I see that sndvol32.exe is NOT running.

Ugh, help!

Lots of good advice at that site, but, nothing stated works. I agree with
the author of that site, this is clearly a bug in Windows. It is small
comfort to know that I am not alone in suffering this problem...

ALas, Ramesh, this didn't work either. I suffer what the author of that post
said "If there is "Show icons for networked devices" in this location instead
then the problem must be someplace else."

That's what mine says "Show icons for networked devices".

I told you this one was a challenge! :(

I would suggest you try a nice program I loved from the moment I
installed it

VOLUMOUSE [FREE]

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse.html

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse_setup.exe

Volumouse provides you a quick and easy way to control the sound volume
on your system - simply by rolling the wheel of your wheel mouse.
It allows you to define a set of rules for determining when the wheel
will be used for changing the sound volume. For example: You can
configure Volumouse to use your mouse wheel for volume control when the
Alt key is hold down, when the left mouse button is down, when the mouse
cursor is over the taskbar, and so on...

My Volume Icon went missing from my System Tray yesterday. I read all your
suggestions this morning and took WUBS advice in order to find
"sndvol32.exe". I highlighted this file, then right-clicked to get drop-down
box, then clicked the item "pin to system tray", then re-booted. The Icon
has now returned!! Hope you find this information useful from a 65-year old
ex-secretary who won't take NO for an answer!
