Volume icon in taskbar

I have to manually go into control panel and tell my computer to place to
volume icon in the task bar everytime i start my computer. After i start my
computer and go into Sounds, the box is checked next to "place volume icon in
taskbar" but i must uncheck it, then select 'apply', and then check it again
and select 'apply' for the icon to actually appear. This has ALWAYS been a
problem for me. Could it be a bug or an anomole with my XP software?
Anyway, it is annoying and maybe someone can help me fix it.
