volume control

I have a new installation with an m-audio soundcard. When I reboot the
computer, I lose my volume setting... it's resests to minimum. Also,
the "add icon to tray" is grayed out. So I have to always go the the
audio
tab to change the volume. Suggestions?

In the Control Panel Sounds applet under Volume try unchecking the
"Place Volume Icon in the Task Bar", then Apply, then check it again,
click Apply and see if it now works. I somehow lost the icon in the task
bar a few months ago and got it back that way. My keyboard also has
dedicated Volume Up, Down, and Mute keys.
