volume control

when I open volume control, mute check box is checked in 'line in
category', what does it mean,should I uncheck it?
thanks for help.
 
Line-in applies to signals being sent to your sound card from an external
device. For example, if you were to plug a cassette player (remember those?)
into your sound card, you would plug it into the line-in jack. If nothing is
plugged into your line-in jack it doesn't much matter whether it's muted or
not.
