Help please!!

Just put a microphone into the back of my PC and it doesn't seem to work.
I'm trying to do a voice over in Moviemaker and / or voice recording in
PowerPoint. Anyway it won't work. Searched around for the last hour..please
let me get on with what I want to do!! [I'm looking to put together a CD for
a colleagues retirement next week - I have a bunch of video clips and sample
pictures to put together and want to narrate some, and have music on other
bits and so on - only thinking a 10 minute presentation and I've never tried
this before - seems like I've fallen at the first hurdle!!]

Have you try the simple recording using the default recorder within window,
there should be wave jumping once you speak to it.
If not check your XP hardware have you got mic in the control panel!
