Voice chatting issue on Vista Home Premium

Hi,

I have got a very strange problem and would really appreciate if someone can
help me out with it. I recently bought a dell Inspiron 1525 which came with
WIndows Vista home premium. everything is running fine on the machine and
also the media - Movies, songs, voice recording etc are all running fine.

The only problem is with voice chatting on chat messengers like Gtalk,
yahoo, windows live. The chat browsers seem to work perfect except that I
cant hear what other persons speak. They can listen to my voice, but I cant
hear what they say. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling these chat browsers
a few times but it gives me the same problem. There is no error message as
such. And as I said, I can listen to music, I can see movies with songs on
the same PC but I cant hear what other people say while voice chatting. I
heard there was some Codec issue with Yahoo messenger and tried installing
the tsp_codec as an administrator but even that did not help. I installed the
latest Gtalk, Yahoo messenger ( as well as Windows messenger Live but still
there is the same problem. I dont know what is wrong. If my PC speakers or
audio drivers were bad I would not be able to listen to music also but I can
hear songs record voice etc. Its only when I try to voice chat with other
people I cant hear what they say. They hear me pitch perfect.

I would request someone to please help me out with this issue if there is a
known problem or resolution.

Exactly my problem.

I have Vista Home Basic.

I can hear music, when I test on yahoo voice chat, the lights light up, but
when I try to record sounds on Start>All programs>Accessoires>sound
recording, it does not record anything.

I suspect the root cause is the same that prevents me from being heard on
the other side.

Please someone help. I think I have turned on all the correct options in the
control panel. But still...

Thanks in advance

Is the front mic jack enabled?
Is it set as the default input device?
Is the mic sound level set high enough?

Finally I have managed to record my voice. That proves that the mic is
plugged in correctly and that the hardware is not defective.

But when I tried Skype test, it failed. I cd not be heard at the other end,
when I called someone.

I will try this now on MSN and Yahoo MSN and then report here. I feel I have
made some progress yesterday.

Thanks
