VLOOKUP or MATCH >=255

Using VLOOKUP or MATCH, if my Lookup Value is greater than 254 I get
#Value!. This is obvious a limit in Excel 2003. Is there a way around
this using other formulas or even VBA.

Let me clarify. The Lookup Value is greater than 254 characters.
