Vitsa 64, Acomdata with WD HD 320 GB, need 64 driver

I have backed my data on a Acomdata with a Western Digital HD 320 GB
(external drive).
It worked on windows XP 32 but not on Vista now.
WD says they have no driver for 64 for a 3rd party.
Acomdata on their web site has none either.

Vista does not recognize (see) in My Computer this external drive.

How can I resolve my problems?

Some older external drives have firmware which is not compatible with
Vista. Check with Acomdata to see if this applies to your drive.

If so, you will need to buy a drive case, presumably PATA not SATA,
which is compatible and transfer the disk.

I DID buy a new My Book with WD and it works on 64.
BUT that does not give me the saved data back on the Acomdata. No support on
their website either.

If you Google for Vista related articles with your drive model number
you should find whether your Acomdata drive is Vista compatible.

External drives do not need drivers since the days of Windows 9x. They
use Windows drivers so the only question is whether the drive's case
firmware gives a response which identifies the device to Vista as a
disk. If it does not, you need a new case for the disk.

It is likely Acomdata that is the problem and not the drive.

This is one of the problems with using a proprietary backup program. There
have been problems with one or another ever since Windows 3.1.

The best way to backup your data is just by copying it to an external drive
using copy/paste or a backup program that has no sort of compression.

You will have to connect the drive to a Windows XP computer that has the
requisite program installed to extract the files you need. Then just resave
them using copy/paste.

I have been through this myself numerous times before I finally "saw the
light". I now use Microsoft SyncToy 2 for all of my backups. The files are
just copied to the destination and nothing is needed to restore the files
that does not come on every Windows operating system since Windows 3.1
