Having just "upgraded" my machine to W XP Professional from W XP Home, the
green visual incremental volume indicator and mute notice has disappeared.
This is a very useful item and I would like it back. Can anyone kindly
suggest how I can do it? Thank you.

That's a function of the keyboard driver. Look for one that is XP Pro
compatible on the keyboard manufacturer's or computer OEM's web site.

To display the volume control icon in the notification area
Open Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel.
On the Volume tab, under Device volume, select the Place volume icon in the
taskbar notification area check box.
