Visual C++ Run time error

Whenever I attempt to open IE the home page comes up and
with it a message saying that I have a Visual C++ Run time
erroe and that the program is terminated abnormally. I
have via a company network downloaded the latest version
of IE and installed it. This problem started in 98 and I
have upgraded to XP with no difference. I did a
sfc /scannow, ran Ad-Aware and am looking for viruses. All
to no avail. The same message appears and I am not allowed
to open IE. What can I do without a complete reformatting
of the drive? Help!

It's important to keep the definition table up to date with the latest
version.
