I installed Vista Service Pack 2 and now get Test Mode on the four corners
of the monitor after boot up. Any thoughts?

Thanks Mike

Did you by any chance shut down before the installation was complete?

Have you shut down and rebooted since you began to see test mode? Choose to
start Windows normally! What happens?

I did do a cold reboot and it still boots in to test mode. The start-up is
normal it indicates it in msconfig.

You must have msconfig set to safe boot. When once your computer has
started, open msconfig and remove the check from safe boot. Then restart. It
it isn't this I have no idea as to how you have hosed your system.

Hello Michael,

The only way that your computer should have "test mode" in all four
corners is if you have used the advanced startup options (F8 on boot)
and disabled driver signing enforcement in 64 bit Vista.

From an elevated command prompt type
bcdedit.exe /set testsigning off
then hit enter. Reboot your computer.

I got exactly the same thing in 32-bit Vista when installing a fresh
copy of the complete OS Vista w/SP2 DVD from Technet. Nothing would get
rid of it. In the end a format/reinstall cured the situation.
Something in SP2 sometimes triggers it I think and it's a bit of a
mystery as to what.

It may be the fact of a secondary download site.
Downloading and installing it via WU presents no problems at all and that is
with dial-up. There were nearly 350 MBs' and it took just a little over four
hours to download. Even installation time was very short. All of this is
quite unusual to me, since it should have taken at least a day according to
previous experiences. Hence the problem must be viewed as local.

I didn't shut down before the installation completed. It was successful

Hi Jane,

That worked perfectly. I actually read about that command in a thread on
google but wanted to get some feed back from the group before executing it.

Thanks again Jane, and to everyone else for the input.

Michael

...interesting thought, I have gone to advanced options to reimage the raid
array, however I do not remember disabling the driver signing enforcement.
Maybe it has something to do with recovery?

anyway, thanks again :)
