If you are happy with your present equipment and software, why would you change?
Remember "If it aint broke, don't fix it."
When your computer no longer serves your needs, then get a new one with the latest OS.
(By then the bugs will be out and the supporting equipment will be ready for the new OS.)

Very good advice, that. On a more prosaic level, I would ask:

- Are you an inveterate gamer, who wants the latest in speed and
graphics abilities for the latest games?

- Do you do a lot of video manipulation (editing video, etc.)

If the answer to either or both of those questions is "yes", you would
likely appreciate the Vista upgrade. If the answer to both is "no",
stick with XP for now - you have little to gain switching. It will
likely be on your next computer by default, anyway.

Yes, it is worth it to switch as long as there is a benefit in windows
Vista you need to compensate for the cost.

If there is nothing you expect to gain and Windows XP does what you
need it to do, then you should probably stay with Windows XP.

Most people should stay with what they are currently using until a
software or hardware requirement determine it is time for an upgrade.

Windows XP will probably be supported for several more years so the
release of a new operating system is not sufficient reason to upgrade.
No more than a new model car means it is time to get a new car.

IMHO, probably not. If XP is doing the job to your satisfaction, I see
no reason to go to the expense and grief of installing a new OS.

I've two desktop PCs here, one has XP Home & the other has Vista Home
Premium - which I've had for a month.
The only thing that's better about Vista is the Solitaire game, everything
else about Vista is less user friendly than XP Home.
Microsoft could have spent all the money they spent on Vista to produce
something that is an improvement on XP, instead they chose to do the
reverse.

Vista starts measurably slower, starts programs noticeably
slower, and shuts down markedly slower.

We have slowly (sic!) converted each and every PC to
XP Pro SP2. They now start and stop faster and run
applications quicker. And, with XP, there are hoardes
fewer nasty helpful aids we have to say "NO" to.

You might want to review the DVD and other media capabilities.

I'll stick to Windows 98 if I'm just doing word processing... I think that is
the point.

If you have an application that is running only in Vista then use it. But
you would compromise your other application due to some compatibility
issues...

If Windows Vista is unsatisfactory, return it, very easy in North
America, uncertain about other regions.
If Vista came with the computer, return it.
Windows XP computers continue to be sold through Dell, Toshiba and
possibly other major OEMs.
Also, many local shops will build a computer to your specs and install
the operating system of your choice.

You seem to think having the "newest and shiniest" is not a sufficient
reason.

Based on NEED, you may be correct; based on WANT, not so. "Want" is the
driving force behind fashion, autos, medicine, anything labeled "new and
improved" and girlfriends.

It's okay to "want" something new...

"Just to have" is not a reason, "WANT" is one of many possible
reasons.

The way I understand Bruce, a newer version in itself is not a reason
to purchase anything.
"WANT" is a reason.
If you want something and have the resources to get it, go ahead.
