Vista/XP networking problems

I've read many of the posts on this board, but I'm still unable to solve my
network woes.

Windows XP desktop: installed SP2 and LLTD protocol
Windows Vista laptop: configured as specified in this forum
Both computers share the same work group

Status:
XP can see Vista but cannot access files: "Access denied"
Vista can see XP computer when clicking 'View full map' but cannot see the
computer when exploring the 'Network' tab.

Any thoughts on next steps?

Some questions that will help in troubleshooting.

What versions of XP and Vista?

Do you have the same user account and password on both computers?

What firewalls are on both computers?

What is the location of the files you are trying to share on the Vista
computer?

XP home edition
Vista Home Premium

There are three accounts on each computer. Two of the accounts are
identical on each computer; the third one is different.

Firewalls are disabled on both computers.

For now, I'm only using the Public folder on the Vista computer to share
files. If I can make that work it would be good enough.

How to give Permissions are there, too.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

Thanks Mick. Unfortunately there was no new info in the article which could
solve my problem. I already have all of my settings as specified in the
article along with what you recommended.

The unusual part is that my Vista PC can see my XP PC when I click 'View
Full Map', but it doesn't show the XP PC when I browse 'Network'.

I'd start by diagnosing the network setup, using logs from "browstat status",
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each
computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (Download browstat, and read how to run the Vista command window as
administrator!):

At a first glance, I couldn't debug the problem, but I will keep reading

That's not the problem, but that's a good descriptive symptom. That's why you
can't see one computer from the other.

The browser requires NetBT. I don't see any indication that it's not active, on
both computers. For instance,

The most usual problem in this case would be a misconfigured or overlooked
personal firewall of anti-worm component, blocking SMBs. What anti-virus do you

Other possibilities. Davis-Laptop has a nVidia network controller.

OK. It's fixed!

My Acer laptop came installed with a trial version of Norton security
system. I failed to recognize that Norton had it's own firewall turned on.
Pretty embarrassing I didn't think of this sooner.
