Vista Windows Mail Settings Won't Stick

J

Jack

I have tried on many occasions to change my SMTP port from 25 to 587, but
after I apply my changes and exit Mail and restart Mail, my SMTP ports
resorts back to 25. The same thing happens when I change Outgoing Mail
Authentication settings. I make the changes and things work, but as soon as
I exit the program nothing sticks.

Running Vista Home Premium with the latest updates.

Either your antivirus program or one of your other security programs
may be blocking writes to the registry. Changes can't be saved if
they can't be written to the registry.
Some of the security programs known to do this are:

Ad-Aware Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
Kaspersky
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spy Sweeper
Spyware Doctor
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5, reported to be fixed in later versions.

Gary, I do have Spybot - Teatimer running, but when a program tries to make
a change to the registry I'm prompted to accept or block the change. I am
not getting prompted by Teatimer after I make a change. With the number of
programs listed above, is the only option to disable or remove these
programs? That's doesn't seem like an option to me. My Antivirus program is
Bitdefender.

You can do a trial uninstall of Teatimer. If no improvement, reinstall
Teatimer. You may have to do the same with Bitdefender.

Also, email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for
reasons explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Instead of uninstalling your security programs, another option is
upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive security programs.

Disable Spybot Tea Timer before making such changes. See
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=32409

NB: If you don't fully understand what Tea Timer does and how it does it,
leave it permanently disabled.

I removed Tea Timer from loading, but the problem persists. Are there any
special requirements for Windows Live Mail?

No special requirements for Windows Live Mail.
When you run it the first time, it will import all your WM data.
