Vista will not boot up

Not having made any real changes, Vista decided to not boot up all the way
today. It gets close but stops with a black screen with mouse cursor in the
middle. I can move the mouse, but nothing else happens and no other keys
work. Safe mode doesn't help - cursor is just slightly bigger. All factory
defaults in the BIOS are still in tact. This is on a Dell Inspiron E1505.
Any ideas on how to recover the problem to enable Vista to boot up all the
way? BTW, Media Direct (Dell feature with a secondary power button) still
works fine. It even accesses the hard drive to display photos, etc. But
full boot up to Windows Vista stops short... I would appreciate any help.
Thanks!

Boot from your Windows
Vista DVD, select the System Repair Option > on the setup screen, select
'Repair Computer > Select your installation of Windows > select Startup
Repair option and follow instructions.
