Vista will not boot - seems dead

Are we talking about a different computer for XP or are you dual booting.
You do realise that fixboot defaults to the system partition, but should be
done on the Vista partition if different.
Since you never said anything about multiple drives or multiple partitions,
I have always assumed 1 drive and 1 partition.
Good luck with the reinstall if you decide to do it. At least you have any
data and only have to reinstall programs.

No, just one Vista Home Premium installation, two partitions (primary and
active with Vista in, one much much smaller partition with Compaq Recovery
Image in). O well, obviously this is a big lesson for me in always backing
up the system!
