Vista voice recognition

Response to above video from another user, Dragon Naturaly speaking

An actual demostration of Vista Voice recongition....

-Vista is stupid (TM)

But the difference is, I don't need to shell out extra cash when the
functionality already comes bundled with the OS. Also, I have seen a
significant improvement with Speech in Vista, you just have to be willing to
practice it.

I have a better Idea... take voice recognition out, reduce the price of
vista,
so we can buy a product that works.

MS tries to put in basic functionality programs that do various tasks.
Thats not a bad idea....
But with voice recogition they blundered. Either it works, or it doesnt.

And in vista, it just doesnt.

I know that they (MS) knows that vista recongition stinks, and they have
bought a new company that specialized in this area...

so in the future it will improve.

Not sure what the point is here. Your beloved Ubuntu doesn't come with
integrated voice recognition at all, does it?

Like Andre says, you've got a functional speech recognition system in Vista,
and if you want something better you can buy it. Same as the graphic
editor, web browser, backup program, CD burner, etc, etc. Basic
functionality which you can enhance if you want to.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Nonsense!! Speech recognition is one of the few technologies that you
CANNOT say that about. All speech recogntion engines have a measurable
error rate. Some are better than others. It is very rare indeed to get
above 99% accuracy without lots of training and very consistent diction.

So far, none of them are good enough for me to use. But some people get
along with them fine.

Ok let me tell it to you this way. Dragon understands human speech better.
:-) Nothing is perfect....

You've use it in your computer (which Vista version do you have?)and it
doesn't work (don't lie!). Or you heard someone else say it doesn't work.
Which is it?

Agreed, not to mention the fact that if you want to do an objective test
then you need to have the EXACT same setup for testing both pieces of
software.

Also microphone quality has a ton to do with results that you get, as does
background noise.

So, unless they were really stringent about their testing methods, their
results are useless.

I just wish dragon was available for vista in this country!
Unfortunately it isn't. So I'll just have to make do with this for
now. But dictating into a non Microsoft application is enough to drive
anyone potty. It's a good way to make sure everyone uses Word!
But it's still a bit of a mess. I see UK and U.S. spelling mixed up.
It also seems to be picking up a lot of Dutch words... In which case
it's reading the text in the documents I am translating. That is not
a good idea!

Martin
