Speech Recognition Capabilities In Vista & XP

This Speech Recognition System in Vista:

1. Is it any good?

2. How does it compare with Dragon Naturally Speaking Pro Solutions 9?

3. Is it included in all versions of Vista?

Now THIS could be considered a SIGNIFICANT improvement over XP's Voice
Recognition features.

BUT, if it's a poor excuse for a Speech Recognition System and one is FAR
better off with Third Party Software -- then it does not meet the Requisite
Threshold.

There is also this additional issue:

You where already made away of this feature and you called it FLUFF and
SMOKE AND MIRRORS.

XP does not have any speech recognition. Your claim that XP is better then
Vista with third party software is bogus. Unless of course all this third
party software is free?

Yup that's the best Windows Vista is insecure article anybody could put up
on launch.

It's a shame they failed to mention the keyboard and mouse is also a "hole".
Just think about the billions of files deleted with the mouse and keyboard,
sounds like a major hole to me.

Long Zheng covered this quite nicely.

"Details of how such an exploit works are sketchy, but leaked documents
reveal the keyboard and mouse APIs offers unprecedented amount of control
over an operating system, allowing anyone and everyone to have full access
to your computer with or without your authorization. This exploit allows
anyone ranging from younger siblings to gang leaders who could use brute
force, such as a punch or tickle, to gain access to your keyboard and mouse
cursors and perform malicious activities such as browsing The Inquirer or
deleting vital fraudulent financial documents."

Go get a copy of OS/2 Warp 4. Speech recognition was inegrated into that
operating system, what is it, 12 - 15 years ago? Great stuff and very
accurate. So now Windows is trying to claim this is something new? Oh yeah,
Warp 3 had Netscape as part of the OS too although Redmond didn't catch on
to that until a few years later.

Get a clue! Nothing in Vista is original and nothing has changed in Windows
except for the pictures on the screen!

Speech has always been both sold with other products (originally with
Microsoft Sound System then later with Office) and always available for free
with the programmming documentation (download the Speech SDK if you want
it).

I first used it on Windows 3.1 and last tried it with Office XP/Windows XP.
In spite of over a decade between the times they still can't tell when one
abuses the stupid program.

Who said speech recognition was original? Please pay attention.

However, any and all SR from that long ago was horrible. I remember the
first version of Dragon'. It was horrible. It took HOURS to setup and
often failed. It was very temperamental and didn't work on my low voice AT
ALL. I could never get it to run. Not even years later. However with
Vista, it does a pretty good job with my voice. Much better then anything
else I've tried. However I have not tried any other third party apps in a
long time.

If that's truly what you think then you are ignorant beyond any hope.

I'm sure you are ignorant about all sorts of things.

But that doesn't prevent you from sounding off foolishly from the profound
depths of your own self-fashioned pit of ignorance.

Ignorance Combined With Arrogance & Incompetence. The worst possible
combination.

You display all three in glorious profusion.

Show us some more of your parlor tricks and pratfalls...

I know your mad because about 10 different people all put you in your place
here but that's no reason to act like this. I hope you don't wonder why
people don't take you seriously.

I just thanked someone for info. Your actions are ridiculous at best.

What's funny about this "security hole" is that it was always a possibilty
before with 3rd party software. If people would read past the headlines,
they would realize there isn't really a flaw with the software.

You open a recorded file which have commands, you have your microphone by
your speakers, the speech recognition then does what the recorded file tells
it to.

Actually try and do this your self. Record a sound file and play it next to
your speakers, the conditions have to be just right. You would have to be at
your computer and actively open the recorded file, a sound file isnt going to
automatically play.

Why should someone else be responsible for files you download and decide to
play? What about executables, .exe? Aren't those a security hole too, maybe
Microsoft should close off Windows API so you can no longer develop Windows
Applications. Why should Microsoft have to put a check in the Speech
Recognition to see if the sound coming from the computer is the same sound
coming in from the Microphone?

Then I suppose a security hole could be if some one leaves a Zune with the
speakers next to your computer's Microphone that could be a security hole
too. (Would this be a Zune or Vista security hole?) Or maybe you are talking
on a speaker phone and some one on the other line starts issuing commands to
Vista...
