Dragon Naturallyspeaking Vs. Vista Speech Recognition

I'm in a real quandary: due to a handicap I'm forced to use a speech recognition product in order to even enter this email. Until recently I was using Dragon NaturallySpeaking (this compatible and works with Microsoft Messenger whereas Vista's speech recognition refuses to do so)

For an article on Ajax I was writing some update on Vista I had installed - one of those cannot be uninstalled but you need to install it anyway- caused my DNS to cease to function. So I started utilizing Vista speech recognition as required -- naturally this happens when tech support is closed.

I can tell you this: in side-by-side "trials" Vista speech recognition is superior, however Dragon NaturallySpeaking is far more compatible with a variety of software, and software development is far easier with DNS then with Vista.

I see that Windows Update has another "can not be removed once installed" awaiting me to install it. Oh joy!

Unfortunately, although amusing to watch, it most definitely sucks to have no choice but to deal with this "state of the art" fiasco. Regardless of whether I'm using Vista's speech recognition or Nuance's product; my productivity has gone straight down the tubes. And this is on a kick ass machine with lots of memory.

I recall that before I was handicapped I was typing at up 120-130 words per minute. Looking at my watch, this missive has taken me close to nine minutes to enter.

This sucks big time.

I want to see you to post more on teh issue. I purchased Dragon Naturally
Speaking not because of any handicap 6 or 8 years ago and after a few
attempts to convert my speech in typed text I gave up on it. It still sits
actually next to my desk now. I wanted to save on a transcriptions but the
life took another turn and I realized I did not need it.

A week or so ago while I was still home in AM the phone rang. Usually I bark
at those sales people and I did but for some reason I did not hang up in a
second. It was Dragon from Florida. It appears they are desperate.

I was wondering why? Now I understand: you are saying that MS speech
recognition is much more superior. it is nice to know.

OK, I think this forum MUST, have an obligation to help you. I will get it
started. I do not do what you do, although I tried Windows Messaging before
with limited success because of network limitations at that time.

There is NO Windows Messenger in Vista. I think it has been replaced by
Windows Meeting Place. At least it is in my Ultimate.

I just clicked on it. It offered me to set up teh API. I did not want to
because I do not need it and I do not want to clatter this machine. I
cancelled it. I can pick up my phone and call anywhere I want.

I hope other people around here and there some who are helpful and honest
will try to pitch in. On my part I suggest if you still have any unresolved
issues you should call MS: 800-MICROSOFT. The voice mail will give you a
bunch of crazy choices including an option to use a paid consultation,
ignore them all and get straight to the operator. Explained them precisely
what you posted here. I can assure you they will be talking for you for an
hour and will be charge not a penny. They will be happy to help you.

My brother-in-law, a lawyer, uses Dragon naturally speaking, the legal version, all day long. He claims that it has made him far more productive -- your opinion about lawyers can determine if this is a good thing or a bad thing. :)

This is coming to you through Dragon NaturallySpeaking right now. I haven't determined yet what makes one product operate better or more efficiently than the other product. Right now it looks as if there is a noticeable difference if I am replying to a mail message (including newsgroups messages) if they were posted in Rich text versus plain text. It appears that if I attempt to reply to a Rich text message using Dragon NaturallySpeaking things will begin to screw up and force me to go to Microsoft speech recognition until a reboot.

Although I appreciate your intent I really really hate the word "must" -- especially when it involves anything on a computer!
There is NO Windows Messenger in Vista. I think it has been replaced by
Windows Meeting Place. At least it is in my Ultimate.

What about the Web based Microsoft Messenger? I think that Messenger and Windows Meeting Place serve entirely different purposes?

My own experience with the 1-800 number: they take a long time, you repeat your story multiple times, you get placed on hold a lot, and their success rate does not a pure to be all that helpful.

I find this group to be far more helpful, but only if you ignore the Linux trolls!
