Vista Upgrade - Custom built comp help

Hello,

I earlier this year (March/April) brought about £500/£600 worth of computer
parts to build a future ready computer that can run Windows Vista. After
having all the parts for now 7months i have put the computer together last
week and brought a copy of Windows Media Center Edition with a Vista upgrade
coupon which i'll be installing on my computer. Im just wondering how i can
go about claiming my free Vista upgrade?

Do i need to provide all the receipts from ebuyer.com (where i purchased the
parts from) from 7months ago? aswell as the receipt for MCE from last week
along with the redemption form?.

You'll have to contact the vendor you obtained the coupon from
since they are solely responsible for administrating the free Vista
upgrade offer.

Hi Carey,

I think we will see more and more of these. The poster has bought and
OEM CD which includes the Express Upgrade coupon. Now these are
supposed to be used by OEM/System builders to build a complete machine
and ship it with the coupon etc.
This is a hang over from this whole end user purchasing OEM media and
thus becoming their own OEM that we went through a few years ago.
Looking at the web site to claim the upgrade it is hard to see how to
work around this
Have a look at

and drive forward through the various options to see where it may stop
for someone just buying OEM media with a coupon.

Hi Mike -

I can see that if a customer built his own PC, it would not
necessarily have a PC-Model or Serial Number. However,
I looked at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16832116171
and a NewEgg customer (FLA Tony on 11/27/2006) suggested this workaround:

"Coupon worked for me"

"I entered zeros for the model and serial number as a previous poster had suggested.
That guidance is even on the site. It states it will ship 4-6 after the beginning of January.
Shipping charges were not disclosed until the end."

And this posted by "Scorpiouscat" on 11/22/2006:
Ref:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustR...&SortField=0&SummaryType=ALL&Pagesize=&Page=2

"Windows Vista Redemption Deal"

"Pros: I just talked to Newegg via their Chat contact and they assured me that MS
would honor ALL Newegg Vista Coupons. MS is still having issues with their redemption website.

Cons: If you cannot get your coupon to redeem contact Newegg and they will help you.

Other Thoughts: Also, I confirmed that you do not need to buy a computer or anything else to
redeem the Vista Coupon. Only need to buy one of the qualifiying copies of Windows XP."

So, I assume that entering "zeros" for the PC-Model and Serial Number
would be OK if a customer does not have a PC-Model or Serial Number
to enter in the Windows Vista Upgrade form.

What do think, Mike?

I also built my own PC, and bought xp 64 from zip zoom fly, the online
confirmation went fine but i'm unsure what to send with the mail. After
looking at the reviews on newegg i decided just to mail the zipzoomfly
reciept with the form and hopefully that will work. I'll let you know what
happens.
