vista ultimate

Hello

I've p4 2.8 ghz pc with 512 mb ram. Its about 3 years old.

I'd like to know if vista ultimate 64x would be compatible on my system.

I'm little confused with vista terminology on 32x ... 64x ... and 86x ...
can someone enlighten me with brief
description. What would be ideal for my system 32x .. 64x .. or 86x ..?
Thank you.

To use the 64-bit version of Vista or XP, you need a CPU that supports
64-bit processing, such as the Pentium-D or Core2 series from Intel.
The Athlon-64 series from AMD is also acceptable.
You didn't mention which CPU you have, so I can't answer you directly.

x86 refers to any CPU that is backwards compatible with the Intel 80?86
line,
i.e. the 80386, 80486, etc. which also includes their Pentium series and
Core2.
Only the latest processors have 64-bit capability. The older ones are
strictly 32-bit,
and will not handle 64-bit versions of Windows.

x86 is used synonymously with 32bit, so there are only two versions, 32bit
and 64bit. To use 64bit you have to have a 64bit processor. Either 32 or
64 bit Vista will run on a 64 bit processor but only 32 bit Vista will run
on a 32 bit processor. What processor do you have, though I'll hazard a
guess that no matter what processor you would be best off at this point with
32bit Vista.

Microsoft develop product for 3 primary CPU architectures

x86 - also referred to as 32-bit. The most common platform
x64 - sometimes referred to as 64-bit. This is really the two technologies
from AMD and Intel that allow a processor access to more memory then could
be addressed by the the old 32-bit (x86) architecture, by using 64-bit
addressing. The Intel technology is called EM64T and AMDs is called
actually called AMD64
IA64 - a real 64-bit platform developed by HP and Intel. Microsoft build
Server operating systems and applications for this platform. There is no
version of Vista for it (although there was a version of XP).

So your question is "is your Intel processors in your PC a P4 with EM64T
processor capable of running the x64 editions of Windows Vista".
Go to the Intel web site and find out if you processor supports EM64T

Forget 64bit unless you have to run 64bit applications which require more
than 4gb RAM.. one day, 64bit will be mainstream, but it is a ways off yet..

Frankly, my dear

That's a 32-bit system.
Bear in mind that there will prolly be more apps that'll run on x32 than on
x64.
x32 makes more sense for you right now.

Vista 32 bit will run on this system -- but you will need to at least
double the installed RAM, and likely would do well to replace the older
video card with something a bit more current (say an ATI 9600 AGP
4x/8x).

i have a amd 64x athlon 3500+ and 1gb ram, geforce 7600 GT 256 ram and am
running windows vista ultimate x64. for some reason it keeps hanging at
random moments

could this be cause the harddrives were to hot (even with a cooler and
unhooking sata drive it seemed to take more time before i had hangs) and it
stops? or memory/proccesor getting to much workload that system halts?

does it need more cpu power or more memory?

or perhaps i should try and see if i can run x86 instead of x64
