Despite working Ok previously and without conscious action on my part
restore point creation & backup now do not workt I have tried to make
a backup image, it failed. I have them noticed that despite auto
restore points being turned on no restore points had been created.
Tried to make a backup & restore point. Got "Shadow copying the
specified volume is not supported (0x8004230C). Anybody out there know
how t fix this please. Thanks in advance.

This happens both with and without an external hard drive connected.

Sure. Just dump Vista and 'upgrade' to Windows XP. I did.

Dell forced Vista down my throat when I purchased my new laptop six months ago.
After five months of Vista grief, I upgraded it to Windows XP Home Edition... at a
cost of $235. It was well worth it though. The past month has been XP bliss.
