Vista System Backup Does Not See Internal Hard Drive

I've been using Vista Ultimate 64 for several months and have made several
full system backups to a second internal hard drive using the Backup &
Restore Center. About a month ago I tried to backup to the DVD and it failed
due to compatibility issues. Just recently I tried to perform a new full
backup to the hard drive, but when the Center looks for backup devices, it
only finds the DVD and not the hard drive. The HD is working fine and still
has a full backup and plenty of space. I can successfully backup Files from
the Center with no problem.

Can anyone give me some ideas where to look for the problem of why a
complete backup doesn't see the HD? Thanks in advance.

Can I add that I can't backup to another drive on my network. It is a
network attached storage, a separate drive attached to my network. It is
formatted in ext3 but Vista sees it as NTFS.
