Backup and Restore failure

I made a backup using the "Backup and Restore" center in Vista Home Premium,
storing it on a hard drive (D). After re-formatting the C drive and
installating the 64 bit version of Vista, the Backup and Restore center
"Restore" utility does not "See" the restore data on the D drive. Vista does
not ask me where to look for it. Thanks for your help!

Can you provide the steps you are taking to restore your files? I want to
understand what you mean by Backup not "seeing" the files.

Hi, and thanks for the interest! In the Backup and Restore Center, I select
Restore From Latest Backup (Which is on my D hard drive with 20GB of backup
files and nothing else). Vista then says: "The disk containing the backup is
not accessible. Please make sure it is turned on and connected to the
computer". (The D drive appears OK on "My Computer") Advanced Restore shows
the backup time and date, but says "Backup location is not available", and
then repeats the above message about the disk not being accessible. Any ideas?

D drive is an internal IDE drive. C is a SATA. It is confusing because
"Backup" let me select D and had no trouble writing 20GB of data to it, now
it can't find it!

Can you actually find the backup on D by browsing to it? It should be under
a folder at the root of the volume. The folder has the same name as your
computer.

Thanks for your continued interest.. yes, there is clearly a 20GB folder on
the D drive with the computer's name on it. Vista seems to indicate the drive
is healthy but "Restore" considers it "Not accessible" Oddly, "Restore" just
seems to go looking for the backup files on its own, and won't allow me to
direct it anywhere.

OK, thanks for all the detailed info. I will ask the Backup team why the
Backup tool wouldn't be able to access a drive even though you can do so
from Explorer.

Would you zip and email your backup log files to me? They are located in
%windir%\logs\windowsbackup\. Please remove "Online" from my address.

I had some success in restoring files after I pressed on through warnings
and just clicked anything since I thought I was screwed anyway. Wishing now I
had mapped out what I did. Restore did not in any way actually reconstruct my
system, but it did allow me access to the data so I could do it myself. All
my music is home safely. Things only started happening after I tried the
"Restore from another computer" option, even though it seemed completely
wrong. Thanks for your help!

Jill, this issue is also my issue. You have not answered it, and I hope you
do. The question is what do you do to get Vista to see the location of the
backup? It says it is not accessible, but it really is. The computer
response to restore from backup is "The disk containing the backup is not
accessible" which is not actually the case. Vista doesn't even look for it.

Thanks
