Vista SP1 Fails To Install

George Dingwall

Hi all,

SP1 went through the full install routine, but when it reaches the end
of Stage 3, I get a message saying that SP1 failed to install and it
then goes through a lengthy process to revert to the computer's
previous state. There is no detailed error message telling me why it
failed to install.

I've tried both the automatic and manual download versions of SP1.
I've also tried it with all of my virus and internet security turned
off. I still get the same message.

Anyone any ideas as to how I can get SP1 to install. I have Vista
Ultimate on a Dell dimension, Intel Core2 CPU 6700 @ 2.66GHz, 2660
MHz and 4 Gig of memory.

Thanks for any help.
Bye for now,

I went for the free support from Microsoft. They had me tape my original
Vista Ultimate disc, do an install right over top of the current version,
then run SP1 on. Worked like a charm, but I don't know why. They must be
having a lot of issues with this to ovffer FREE support.

Cudos to them though as the support rep stayed with me until it was
completed and working fine.

Hi George. Why SP1 sometimes installs without error and other times
won't on a nearly identical system is one of the great unsolved
mysteries of the universe. To hazard a guess... through Stage 2 of the
"upgrade" process the changes are merely getting copied and installed
on your system. Stage 3 actually tries to boot your system with the
changes in place and then may crash.

I put the blame where it belongs, on Microsoft incompetence.

Its like their laughable Vista Upgrade Advisor. You're told to run it
on your system while you still have XP or some earlier version of
Windows running. It grinds along and often says go ahead and install
Vista, you should be fine, it didn't see any conflicts. Then after you
BUY Vista and actually try to install it, only then does it say it
can't.

If you can't install SP1 just skip it. Actually a lot of people have
reported installing it made their system more unstable, not better.
There's nothing major included in SP1. Its basically a dud just like
Vista is.

The in place upgrade clears up corrupted databases and other stores that are
often a reason preventing the upgrade.
