Files Being Deleted In Vista Ultimate

Hi all,

I've had a strange problem in the last few days. When using Excel
2003, all files I save are deleted. Sometimes they get deleted as soon
as I've saved them, other times they remain on my PC until the next
time I start the computer.

I tried re-installing Excel 2003 but that made no difference. I have
up to date virus and spyware progs on my system and have ran them all
since I noticed the problem and they did not find any problems.

I have since removed Excel 2003 from my system and installed the 60
day trial of Office 2007 Standard. The files I save from Excel 2007
are saved normally. (Touch Wood).

I don't have this problem with any other office file, or any other
saved data or document file.

I'm struggling to understand what would need to be going wrong for
this type of thing to happen.

Has anyone using Vista and Excel 2003 come across anything like this
problem?

I've not been able to find a solution on the Microsoft site. Any help
will be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

My Excel files are stored in D:\My Documents\Excel. I also have backup
copies on two external drives and a drive mirror on a third external
drive.

I have tried moving them to a different folder, but the result was
just the same.

I've been using Excel 2003 without any problems.

I'm thinking that maybe your files are being saved into a different
directory.
As you may know, Vista no longer uses the standard XP directory names like
"My Documents", "My Pictures, etc.
It creates files with these names, but they are not directories, they are
junctions, which point the software to a different directory.

Maybe Excel is saving the files to a directory named \Documents\Excel
???????

I'm not sure if this is the case, or if Vista would do it if D: was a
different drive than where Vista is loaded.

I use a directory named CO:\data\spreadsheet for my excel files, and have
had no problems.

Hi Dave,

I've done a command line search for the missing files, and they are
not on the PC.

The only thing that remains to say they were ever there is the
shortcut link in the recent items menu.

It's a puzzler. The only similar thing I've been able to find, is the
occassional virus has been created that can target specific files.
None of the ones I found in my reasearch were that specific that they
only tageteted .xls file, and none of them were all that recent.
Besides, I have up to date virus and spyware progs, none of which are
reporting any threats like this.

Thanks for help.
