hello all.. i have a brand new dell xps 410 with an intel core 2 duo 6600, 2
gb of ddr2 ram, 250 gig hd, and a 256mb nvidia graphics card.. VISTA is
slow.. while using windows media player it takes about 20 seconds to switch a
song. its always freezing up, i have tried everything i can and i have an up
to date just below top end computer. in my eyes vista is crap.. xp media
center edition was possibly the best one.. nothing from previous versions of
xp works correctly.. any ideas on how to get this vista garbage to work right
and faster?

The slow starting music is an oft-posted condition. I have not heard of
anyone solving it in Vista but I have seen it solved in XP. The setting
that has been reported to help some users does not exist in Vista so it is
either buried in the registry or it is a different cause in Vista than in
XP.

So, is that the only thing slow or is the whole thing slow?

The number of poor performing and flat incompatible features on new Dell
laptops with Vista makes me think they rushed to market before they were
ready. It is a real shame.

Same principles as with XP Media Center Ed. Turn off those services /
background programs you don't need running.

eg

Do you need 'Tablet PC' Service on automatic if you don't have a Tablet PC?
Do you need 'ReadyBoost' on automatic if you're not using Readyboost?

etc

We have almost the exact same brand new computer, I upgraded my hard drive
to 320 GB. I haven't done much with music but I can say, I can't stand
Vista so far. I really liked XP, having used '98 and the previous version,
XP was great.

The best thing to do to make the vista garbage work right and faster is to
reformat your hard drive and install Windows XP! Maybe after 6 months when
Micro$quish irons out all the bugs (make that 2+years), then it might work
better.
