I just installed vista 3 days ago and now i can not get it to shut down. the
window screen goes dark but the computer keeps running and the only way to
turn it off is manually.

This happens on mine as well.

What looks like the 'Off ' icon actually puts the machine into a kind of
sleep mode. Despite mine having brand new hardware throughout and NO third
party drivers, sleep won't work.

Instead, right click on the power button and you will see the option to
power it off completely.

That will have to do for now.

Same exact problem here. Except that this happens when I select Shot Down
from the lock tab. This also happens if I change the power button option to
shot down. I have tried new board and gpu drivers, nothing. It seems this
came after the last Nvidia driver found and installed by Vista. Nothing of
importance in my logs... Come on MS, step in.

My HP Vista laptop seems to do the same thing, mostly it seems to do it if
more than one person is logged in on the computer, I tell it to shut down
anyway but it doesn't, it seems to freeze up even after waiting an hour or so
it's still there.
I have to manually hold in the power button.

I'm wondering if it is a profile issue. I have 5 profiles setup on my home
PC and whenever one of them specifically shuts down, the computer hangs in
the shutdown process. This has happened sporatically, but 3 times now and is
getting very annoying. It appears there was a similar issue with Windows XP
after a SP update. I can't tell if my Vista issues started after an update
since I recently got the PC and it was updated by the store.

Any help to get this fixed would be appreciated, though seeing that MVPs
have not responded to the calls for help, last year, I don't expect any
resolution 'til SP1.

This looks like a common problem. I got a new computer with Vista loaded and
performed lap link to transfer programs from my old XP version to the new
computer so I don't know what drivers are causing the problem. However, it
seems to occur when more than one user account is logged on and/or the one
user account has been logged on for an extended period of time. Does any one
know how I can find out what can be causing the problem? It is getting very
frustrating to perform a hard shut down all the time. Thanks.
