Vista: Security center can't update definitions for windows defend

Somehow, for no reason at all, when I restarted my computer today this error
message (the error message in title) showed up. I tried to update the
definitions manually but same thing happened.
Currently my malware and spyware protection is off. But I'd really like it
to be abck on.
Can anyone help please?
