I have just joined this business Vista PC to the domain, Every time I log in
user account control pop's up asking SBS2003 SP1 needs permissions. After
clicking continue, a message appears saying "This Program Has Compatibly
Issues". It gives me the option to not display the message again but if i
restart the PC it re-appears.

We have the same problem and we already applied KB 926505...

I manually joined the Vista boxes machines without error, but now the
permissions to the existing shares don't work. The same user logging in with
XP can read/write/delete/etc, but logged in with Vista Biz they have
read-only rights?!

If you have a solution a PLEASE let me know! We're about to "downgrade" 10
computers to XP Pro or return them to the vendor! I REALLY don't want to do
that!!!

Thanks,
-Paul

After you joined the Vista computers manually did you move them to the right
OU? I would recommend applying all the appropriate updates in the link I
referenced, including the Vista WMI update and the ISA client update if you
use ISA. Remove the computers from the domain then add them with the SBS
connectcomputer wizard.

I've joined several Vista Ultimate and Business clients to several different
SBS domains and I haven't seen the symptoms you've described. I have tested
joining Vista clients manually but with SBS it's always better to use the
wizard. Joining the computers with the SBS wizard gets the computers in the
right OU, adds the users to the correct groups on the local computer, and
much more. I suspect a permissions or group policy issue but without more
information it's hard to say what the issue could be. Are there any errors
in the event logs on the Vista clients or the server? Are the shares on the
server?

Hmmm? We do use "non-standard" OU's... We've got an OU named "Staff" right
off the root, where the users reside, but the computers--whether joined
manually or via the Connectcomputer wizard show in the same place. And
again, XP Pro works fine.

I ASSUMED it was a permissions issue, but perhaps our "non-standard" AD
config is the issue?

What happens when you log on with a domain admin account? Are you getting
any errors about group policy in the event logs on the Vista clients?

You may want to repost the question in the
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs newsgroup.

No errors. Vista logs in quickly, the drives map, it connects to Exchange,
Outlook 2007sends/receives normally and everything seems normal. It's not
until you access the mapped drives or "UNC browse" to the shares do you have
the rights/permissions issue.

If fact, if you open a command prompt within Vista and go to one of the
logical drives, you can copy/rename/delete/create and etc. All things you
cannot do within the Windows Explorer or Windows apps. Very curious!

Same result as domain admin with UAC off. Do you think I might need to
delete or edit the Small Biz GPO for Vista?

When UAC is on do you get the same results? Windows Explorer relies on UAC
being on. When it's off some operations fail silently because there is no
UAC prompt. I don't think this is the cause of your problem but confirming
the problem is the same with UAC on/off will eliminate that possibility. The
reason I asked about domain admins is because domain admins should be a
member of the local administrators group eliminating any local problems.

Do you have NETBIOS turned on?

Can you post the results of ipconfig /all from an XP and a Vista computer?

You might want to try the gpmc.msc console and see what policies are being
applied. Right click on Group Policy Results and pick Group Policy Results
Wizard.

It's a very weird problem. I'm running out of ideas. There are many SBS
experts in the sbs newsgroup. I'm not sure what the results of having your
computers and users in non-standard OU's would be and I don't have time to
test it. Someone in the sbs newsgroup would probably know off the top of
their head.

Thank you for all your help Kelly!

Reading everything I can possibly find on this, from a gazillion different
sources, seems to indicate that the ONLY way to connect Vista to SBS is by
using the connectcomputer wizard and NOT manually joining Vista to the domain.

That however, fails as well with NSHELP complaining about conditions that
don't exist. (I won't EVEN go there!)

Anyway, my deadline has passed, so these Vista boxes all getting packed up
and shipped back to the vendor. We've ordered XP Pro on their replacements.

Thank you again for your efforts!!!

FWIW, I was able to join a Vista business machine to the SBS2003 domain
we have at home with no difficulties. I was logged in as a domain admin
to the machine and I had UAC disabled.

I've been able to join SBS domains with Vista computers both with and
without the connectcomputer wizard. It's much easier with the wizard but it
is possible without it.

FWIW for my customers so far we've only deployed a few test Vista computers,
mostly laptops. It will be a while before I recommend they all switch to
Vista. Heck, I finally just got them all standardised on Office 2003.
Whenever a new OS comes out it's always best to go slow with business
critical stuff. On my own network all my computers are running Vista,
various flavours of Server 2003 and 2008, or Linux with no problems. It can
be done :-)

6 or 8 months ago, we added Vista Biz machines to SBS2003--the same domain,
btw--without issue. However, there's been numerous updates to both Vista
and SBS since and there now seems to be some incompatibly. And there are A
LOT of admins experiencing the same problem we're having!!!

I wish there was a quick fix, because this client gave up and shipped their
Vista computers back! :-(

Sorry I could not be of more help. I had no problems reaching network
shares when I did it about a month ago and both the server and vista
machine had all critical updates applied at the time. I was just doing
it as a basic test. Good luck to you.
