vista- safely remove hardware

When I click "safely remove hardware" and select the appropriate USB memory
stick, I get the message that it is safe to remove the device - but the
activity light on the stick does not go out - it does go out with my other
laptops and desktops running XP or Windows 2000.
Is it actually safe to remove if the activiy light is still on?

Yes, if Vista says that it's safe then it is. Letting the
light on is a new 'feature' of Vista.

unhelpful USB Devices not listed)
Is this is another Vista "improvement"? Or is my wizard "broken".

This works the same way since Windows 2000, this time no reason
to blame Vista.

'safely remove hardware' does what it's named, it removes the hardware
and this is your cardreader. No way to bring it back apart from
disconnecting and reconnecting it.
Internal cardreaders shold not be marked as removable devices but
apparently all USB devices are assumed being removable. Unfortunally
there is no way to configure if a device is listed in the safely
remove facility.

You want to remove the card from the slot, so 'eject' it: Right-click
the drive, select 'Eject'.

I misunderstood and thought this referred to removing the card only.

The light going out was a good feature, at least it let you know that the
power had been switched off and it was safe to remove the hardware. As usual
windows has taken a step backwards IMO.
