vista- safely remove hardware

Guest

When I click "safely remove hardware" and select the appropriate USB memory
stick, I get the message that it is safe to remove the device - but the
activity light on the stick does not go out - it does go out with my other
laptops and desktops running XP or Windows 2000.
Is it actually safe to remove if the activiy light is still on?

Yes, if Vista says that it's safe then it is. Letting the
light on is a new 'feature' of Vista.

Q2

I have 4 card sockets on the front of my Home Premium box. When I used the
Safely remove facility, the USB storage devices (Drives F G H I) are not
recognised until I reboot. (The Add new hardware wizard is singularly
unhelpful USB Devices not listed)
Is this is another Vista "improvement"? Or is my wizard "broken".

This works the same way since Windows 2000, this time no reason
to blame Vista.

'safely remove hardware' does what it's named, it removes the hardware
and this is your cardreader. No way to bring it back apart from
disconnecting and reconnecting it.
Internal cardreaders shold not be marked as removable devices but
apparently all USB devices are assumed being removable. Unfortunally
there is no way to configure if a device is listed in the safely
remove facility.

You want to remove the card from the slot, so 'eject' it: Right-click
the drive, select 'Eject'.

Thanks Uwe,

I misunderstood and thought this referred to removing the card only.

I withdraw my "complaint". :-}

The light going out was a good feature, at least it let you know that the
power had been switched off and it was safe to remove the hardware. As usual
windows has taken a step backwards IMO.

You can also go to the newsgroup:

alt.sys.pc-clone.dell

for some help with this Dell newsgroup. They may be able to answer other
questions you may have about your Dell computer.

When I want to unplug my USB external HD, or mini-DV camera, or printer, I
just unplug it. Never had a problem.

You probably just aren't smart enough to notice any difference in your
computer.
