Vista RTM the Final Deal?

Guest

Is Microsoft Vista RTM the "final" released OS? Are there to be futher mods
that the January 30th version will have that the RTM version will not have
(or will not be able to have)? If there are to be changes, will I be able to
"fetch" them via Windows updates?

I don't have a major problem waiting... I just want to make sure they are
"equal" in quality (RTM = Jan 30 release).

Thanks!

I've heard on another forum that the RTM circulating at the moment has
around 11,000 drivers on the DVD, while there will be over 19,000 in the
final retail version shipping at the end of January.

What you have heard is wrong.
RTM is RTM, there will be no more changes.

The only exception could be if a major issue is discovered which would cause
everything to stop.
But that is nearly impossible at this point considering the development
continuing with 3rd parties based on the RTM.

I guess the same goes for Office, too...?

BTW: Why is there no logo on boot up? It just shows a progress bar... I
noticed this on RTM and on RC2?

Ah yes, but what RTM'd was Enterprise and Business Editions of Vista. The
consumer editions have yet to go RTM IIRC so this where this information
could be coming from.

All editions have gone to RTM, Enterprise and Business have been made
available to end users. RTM means that the OSs have been provided to large
PC manufactures (Dell, HP, etc.) so that they can begin testing and
production of PCs with (all versions of) Vista installed. That way on Jan
30th, they will all have stock piles of Vista PCs in stores and ready to
ship from online warehouses.

RTM is RTM ? Do you work for MS ? They can do any changes they want, it
doesn't take 2.5 months to create DVD's for distribution.

As I remember for XP it was like a month between RTM and release, that's the
time it takes to create the media, all boxes and stuff is already created a
long time ago.

Don't talk about things you know nothing about.

You are clearly the one who doesn't know what you're talking about. Vista
RTM (build 6000) is the final definitive version of Vista. There will be no
changes to it between now and January 30th.

That does not mean that fixes won't be developed for any bugs that do still
exist (and there are many), but they will NOT be included into the DVD etc.
They will start to appear on Windows Update, and will be available for
everyone to install from there.

Sorry but it is you who are wrong. There are no changes made once the
product goes to RTM.

For one thing - dozens of OEMs and System Builders have the RTM code right
now and are building customized install media/restore media for their models
of PCs. Do you have any idea how mad they'd be if Microsoft sent them a
disc and said, "Oh, by the way, we've updated the RTM code so please be sure
you patch everything with this latest update"?

For another, application developers are doing their final certification runs
with the RTM code. Do you think they'd be a bit annoyed if they completed
their testing only to find that Microsoft made a minor change that now
breaks their software?
Don't talk about things you know nothing about.

Exactly.

I don't know what your problem is, MS has even said it is not final code, it
can be changed at any point before the DVD's burn.

But, I guess the executive decisions are made by wannabees with hotmail
addresses on this forum, lol.

Source?

PressPass: Windows Vista was released to manufacturing today -- what does
that mean?
Hallauer: Release to manufacturing signifies the completion of our
development work and the start of the next phase for Windows Vista.

No, but mis-information is dispelled by people who actually do know what
they're talking about.

OK, but that is not what you posted last time.

The new article you just posted is talking about posting new drivers and
fixes to Windows Update that users can apply to their installed copies of
Vista. That is a completely different thing to what we are discussing. By
this argument, Windows XP is not the final deal, even XP with SP2 is not the
final deal, and updates and fixes are still being posted to Windows Update.

Vista RTM, build 6000 as currently available to TechBeta on connect, MSDN,
and TechNet websites is it. It is the real deal. Before this build there was
a chance to get bug fixes etc actually onto the DVD. The DVD images that are
available now contain exactly the same bits as the DVD you will be able to
buy over the counter on January 30th. The next chance for an updated DVD
image is SP1.

OK sorry, I got the wrong impression from a discussion in another forum.
The guy that is working on new drivers for my tv-card said that he had a
deadline for submittal for Microsoft this week, so he must have meant for
testing before Windows Update inclusion on release. However, as many of
these extra drivers will be updates we can expect Vista to be different on
first installation (with internet access). So I am hoping that my bluetooth
Intellimouse will be fully functional and that the Realtek onboard audio
will have it's virtual speaker and dolby headphone feautures working again.

Incorrect. All editions, Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business,
Business Enterprise, and Ultimate went to rtm becasue there are not separate
dvd images for each. All are on the same dvd. If you doubt this, install
6000 without entering a product key. You will get an option to install any
of the above editions except Enterprise (only available through Enterprise
customer (volume licensing, software assurance, etc) procedures). The
edition you install will run for 30 days before you have to enter the
product key (it is different for each edition) and activate.

C

Colin Barnhorst

Correct. Any changes to 6000 will be supplied via updates and patches via
Microsoft Update. 6000 is locked.
