Vista RTM Control Panel Problem

yoshi

I have a weird problem. When I click the Start logo and Control Panel, it
does nothing. The Control Panel will not show up BUT if I create a short cut
on my desktop, it works.

Has anyone seen this?

It's Vista RTM

Thanks,
Yosh

Do you have it set to display as a link or as a menu? If menu (little
arrow) and it pops up as a menu, then clicking it doesn't work.

If you have it set to display as a link and it doesn't work, then I have no
idea.

I'd be interested in knowing how one creates a shortcut for the control
panel on one's desktop. What is the control panel's executable file?

Right click it on the Start menu. Show on desktop is an option.

It's "control.exe"

And most of Control Panel applets are .CPL files under c:\windows\system32.
You can run them directly or from cmooand line/shortcut:

===============================
C:\>dir /b %windir%\system32\*.cpl
appwiz.cpl
bthprops.cpl
collab.cpl
desk.cpl
Firewall.cpl
hdwwiz.cpl
inetcpl.cpl
infocardcpl.cpl
intl.cpl
irprops.cpl
joy.cpl
main.cpl
mmsys.cpl
ncpa.cpl
nvcpl.cpl
powercfg.cpl
sysdm.cpl
TabletPC.cpl
telephon.cpl
timedate.cpl
wmdConn.cpl
wscui.cpl

My Control Panel only shows half the applets and it takes a few seconds for
the rest to display. This is really annoying, considering I have a fast
system with RAID 0 drives. Do you know how to make the rest appear like the
first batch? They really should be Superfetched or something.

You doing Vista or Classic view in CP? I'm running Vista view here and all
pop at the same time, no delays.

Classic View. I don't understand why anybody that is familiar with all the
applets would use anything else.

Sorry, ss. Don't have an answer to this one.

I've seen this behaviour on relatively slow systems while my last setup with
WEI 5.2 (HDD 5.9) doesnt have this problem. So it can be performance issue
that can be sloved by hw upgrade.

Also, which view do you use in Control Panel? If it is one of thumbinal
views (Extra Large, Large, Medium or Small Icons), try to change to List or
Table View to see if it solves the issue.

Well... I changed the CP Start menu entry to show as a menu so it pops
pretty much like classic view in CP itself... so I don't really open CP
itself anymore...
