I tried every format (.DOC, .wps, .doc.wps) and I kept getting a message
saying the file could not be opened because the file may be in use in another
application, file format may not be supported by any of the installed
converters, or the file may be corrupt. The only time I was able to open a
file that I e-mailed was when I sent it attached as a text file. Is there a
converter that I need that I don't have?

You need to make sure that the files you are trying to send aren't open
in some other program when you try to send them.
