Vista - Refuses auto updates

I have a totally legitimate copy (activated, of course) of
Vista-Ultimate. Actually, I'm helping someone else. My problem,
in a nutshell is that the silly OS will not do auto update.
Neither will defender.

There is an AV (Avast).
Updates to Avast function normally via ADSL.

Win updates, at the moment, is set to automatic in
a forlorn attempt to get at least something working.
I can see things trying to access a site but nothing
actually happens except a pretty green activity panel block.

Now, even though I am not a great fan of Vista ... where do I look?

Hi,

Do you have a third party firewall installed?

Thanks and Nope.
I'll check out T's suggestion.
It's quite possible that there is so much data
to be downloaded that the user should have just
let the process finish by itself. I only took
it "on trust" that nothing "ever happens". It
certainly didn't appear to be happening but a
NetMeter will have been installed so we'll soon
know -)

when the automatic updateing stoped working in vista.after two days i found a
link..it took me to where the updater, updater.i guess thats what you call
it.i manually downloaded this and manually..and clicked off of everything and
went back to the updater and started it and it worked fine..maybe some one
else on here.can explain ..what the thing is and where to find it.it solved
my problem..

he needs to manually,,down load the updater.like it was never installed.i got
to it by a link.i dont know how to tell him to get to it..after i reinstalled
the updater manually..it started automatically instaling updates again..it
fixed the problem for me

Post test. Posted a reply before (thank you's)
but didn't find it echoed. This is a followup
testing. News agent said post was successful.
We'll see. Go figure
