80072EE2 - Update/Genuine software fails

I am totally baffled!

I have just performed a clean install (for the 3rd time ... 2 different
Ultimate installs & 1 Enterprise install all with legitimate keys) on a stand
alone box. Installation went a treat ... no hassles. Activation successful.

Cannot perform updates (80072EE2 error) or run the Genuine Software bit
(nothing happens).

Like I said ... stand alone box, no servers, Linksys ADSL router, no problem
with internet access, logged in as local admin, no proxy servers, no DNS
problems, vanilla install of Vista with absolutely no other software
installed ... and not an electronic sausage!

I have even turned off all the firewall features of the router.

Are there any Vista Gods out there who can assist .... or is this just one
of those severe bugs in Vista that is rendering this a useless Windows
release, especially from a business perspective?

Thanks.

Appreciate your message, but I have been through everything in that article
.... no joy.

I might point out that a couple of things though in Step 6:

7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
a. proxycfg -d
b. net stop wuauserv
c. net start wuauserv
d. exit

a> there does not appear to be a proxycfg command in Vista (command not
found error)
b & c> even as local admin, you can perform 'net' commands from CL
(restarted via services)

In any event, like I said, no joy.

I am going to try get another ADSL router, although like I said ... I do
have internet access and no DNS issues.

Anything else?

I got error for updates, but a different number to the standard error number.
My problem was that the CMOS battery had gone flat, and updates from
microsoft would not work with the wrong date and time on my computer

Hi,

Resolved the issue ... kind of.

Problem is with the Linksys WAG54GX2 ADSL router - it can't translate the
update or genuine software requests online!

Connected an old 'stingray' Alcatel Speed Touch ADSL USB modem, found some
beta drivers for Vista online, installed and configured ISP connection ...
voila! Updates work and so does Genuine Software.

So, the next step is to try figure out how to get the Linksys router working
properly.

By the way, in previous troubleshooting, I turned off the firewall
protection, etc. on the Linksys and it still didn't work!
