There's a new Ubuntu version, called Gutsy, that's coming out soon. Wait
for that as it will have a lot more features than the current version has.

Be happy that your Toshiba has XP drivers for your machine. Please try
Ubuntu and you will appreciate a real OS, but probably won't admit it as you
haven't sought help with your frustrations in 8 months. Bye.

I am always suspicious of people who claim they know what the great
silent majority is thinking. If they are silent, how do you know?
Might they not be the great majority who are silently content?

not at all unlike the fanboys here who profess that "Vista is working great
for most users" whenever they reply to someone who is less than satisfied,
eh?
course, these are usually the same boneheads that believe MS's alleged sales
figures too - go figure.

I am teasing them.. I usually would not say such a thing.. the wording is an
exact reverse of their Vista propaganda.

Fanboys being rather slow witted don't "get" sarcasium. You need to
spell it out to them beforehand which takes away the punch line. Or
just ask Frank, their official spokesperson to translate to pig latin.
Frankie is very good at obfuscating anything he reads. Frank excels at
adumbrating. I picked that last word on purpose knowing Frank won't
have a clue what it means. I could prefigurate, but that would just
confuse him more. Oops... sorry, he won't know that word either.

The sales figures they quote don't come from thin air.

They come from NPD, which is a neutral 3rd party corporation.

Here's a blurb about who NPD are and what they do:
The NPD Group, founded in 1967, is the leading global provider of consumer and retail market research information for a wide range of industries. We provide critical consumer behavior and point-of-sale (POS) information and industry expertise across more industries than any other market research company.

The information that they get comes directly from scanned sales at cash registers (also known as POS as mentioned above)

So when a company says so many units have been sold those are units scanned via the registers. If you don't believe the figures a company gives then check out the numbers that NPD has listed.

That will tell you who is being honest, and who is giving false figures.

Also John to be honest you're on a public newsgroup. People typically come here when they have a problem.

Judging the reliability of ANY software from a newsgroup or a tech support forum will never work. The logic behind that is people come here because they have a problem.

If they didn't they probably wouldn't be posting. So count up the number of people who post here with issues, and count the number of people who have purchased the product they are complaining about.

The figures are usually small, be it Windows, OSX, Unix, Linux, etc.

Why don't people just admit that they have their preference in OS and leave it at that? I prefer Vista and OSX. You guys may prefer Ubuntu and Red Hat, or Mandrake, or Darwin, etc.

The point is who really cares? People come here asking for help, not for attitude and it seems that's most of what's flung around here. Tech guys with big egos thinking their product is king.

It's really gotta go.

I . couldn't agree more. Vista came on my Toshiba laptop, and I *hate* it.
Weirdness is the order of the day. Not only is navigating around a huge
bother, but anytime the hard drive hums, which is frequently, my cursor jumps
all over the page; I really have to watch what I'm typing! Just now, my hard
drive hummed and the cursor jumped up to put a period after the "I" in the
first sentence. Sheesh! I have a cordless mouse, which works great everywhere
but on this computer...it flies all over the page, temps you when you get
close to the link you're seeking, then the hard drive does it's thing, and
*bam!!*, I'm somewhere else on the page. Yep, I'm going to track down a copy
of XP, darn it. I loved Windows 2000, but some of my proprietary software
needs a later edition in order to run. Also, discovered after the fact, that
said software isn't recognized by Vista. Stupid, stupid OS, even if my
problems are the result of operator ignorance...I get along in other OSs just
fine, thank you very much!

What you describe is not typical.
It is probably a bad Windows installation or something else is
interfering.
If it appears related to the hard drive, have you run a hard drive
diagnostic?

What has Toshiba support said when you called and asked?

"discovered after the fact"
That is why it is essential to verify Windows vista compatibility
before considering changing operating systems.
This is not new to Windows Vista as it happens with every new
operating system.

If the laptop is new, you have a easy solution, return it.
Then purchase a laptop with the operating system of your choice.
Toshiba, Dell and nearly countless local shops continue to see
desktops and laptops with Windows XP.
