abcd

I have very decent configuration Dell machine as below

P4 3.4 HGz,
4 GB RAM
500 GB Hard Disk
256 MB Graphics card.

My mahcine is really slow, loads slow, works slow, etc. Earlier, I had
Windows XP Professional SP2 on the same configuraiton and it was working
great...now Vista disappointed me. Also I get those alerts (Do you want to
contunie? ) very often...how should I tune my Vista machine for better
performance...I am using Vista Ultimate...

Thanks

What programs are running in the background?
If you have Norton or McAfee uninstall them.

I am using Microsoft Live One care 90 days free trial....so should I
uninstall that for better performance...

I guess Windows XP Professional was the biggest successful OS in Microsoft's
history....really did well ....Even I felt Windows 2003 better than Vista...

Another thing, I still dont understand the start menu advantages in
Vista...what brings benefit over the earlier mechanism....the Vista one is
really confusing ....

Did you do an upgrade or a clean install of Vista? Upgrades are often
problematic. I tried upgrading from XP to Vista and ran into multiple
problems. Then I did a clean install and Vista worked just fine, including
fast performance - and my hardware is not nearly as advanced as yours.

As far as interruptions are concerned, you can turn off the User Account
Control (UAC) in order to eliminate all of those alerts you have been
receiving.

And, as Frank suggested, you can remove McAfee or Norton if you have them.
Both are notorious resource hogs and are very intrusive. I use AVG Free from
Grisoft as my anti-virus program, and Ad-Aware Free from Lavasoft as my
anti-spyware program.

No, I only recommended removal of Norton and McAfee. Never used OneCare.

Vista will be more successful than WinXP ever was.

I don't understand your last paragraph, but I find that little search box on
the bottom left quite handy.

Im testing windows vista with an athlon xp 1800+ with less memory than
required and Im doing ok.Vista is a solid sistem and with much more options
than Xp, It´s simply better. As far as i know i really notices that when it´s
installing microsoft updates it practically hung up, but remember i´m using
only 383 mb of ram.I´m surprised that i could install Vista with this
limitation.Try to master Vista and you will be happy.Norberto.Argentina

I have tried to run Vista on a single core Pentium 4 and a dual core Athlon.
In both cases the result is unusable.
I need to do work, not endlessly twiddle with an unstable OS, with drivers
that do not work as advertised and which cannot network reliably with non
Vista computers.
Clearly there are a subset of computer configurations on which Vista can be
run successfully. Unfortunately I have yet to see one. The most common
reaction I have gotten from people who have bought computers with Vista
installed is that they gave up on it and installed XP.
Microsoft wins either way but . . .

Nobody is forced to use a Microsoft operating system unless they have a desire to run software that has been written for Windows only, in which case they should approach the software author and enquire about a Linux or Mac version..

Nobody is forced to upgrade to Vista unless there are features in Vista that the potential upgrader particularly wants..

If somebody wants to buy a new computer that is pre-loaded with Vista, and that person does not feel that they or any existing equipment owned is Vista ready, they have the option of asking for a different OS to be loaded, and if refused, have the option to try another vendor who may be more amenable..

The option to buy a barebones system or the constituent parts to a system for home assembly is also a possibility, enabling the person to load whatever operating system the person likes..

I am a "house call" trouble shooter for our Computer Club. Other trouble
shooters gather each Thursday morning. I have yet to hear of someone
"...giving up on it..." Our Computer Club's volunteers have installed five
copies in our classroom of 28 computers. All are networked to Windows 98,
Windows ME, Windows XP, 6 Macintosh and one Windows 2000 Pro.

Why does it seem so important to some people to discourage others because of
their inability to get over the "differences?"

Please elaborate on "unusable". How much RAM did these two PCs have? Is the
graphics card at least 64Mb? Are these "purchased with Vista already
installed" systems or ones you installed yourself? If you installed them,
can we assume you visited the various manufacturers web sites for the latest
Vista drivers?

I have a Dell 370 that has been running Vista Ultimate since before release,
with no problems at all. I recently bought a HP laptop, and had problems
with all the crapware but solved that by nuking and installing Vista
Ultimate from scratch. So far no stability issues at all...

Speaking of "crapware" when I ran the Vista Update Advisor, out of the
hundreds of applicaiton on my system guess what it nagged about?

Times up. Only two Microsoft applications; Messenger and another.

That FACT is very telling. Vista under development for over 5 years,
and Microsoft application fail to run under it.

ROTFLMAO!
