I did a new PC build today, with new HDD, graphics card, more memory (2GB
instead of original 1GB), and new motherboard.
I was expecting to have to do a phone activation, but internet activation
worked.

This was on an OEM System Builder key.

Nice and hassle-free!

It did the same to me but I felt very unsafe. I didn't know what the os was
doing by linking to Microsoft.

It was uploading your credit card and subscribing to various pronographic
magazines.

Of course it was, even though I activated as soon as I installed, before any
of my personal stuff was even on the PC. Not that activation does that
anyway.

If you ran Ubuntu (Don't know why anybody would), but you would still be
trying to configure it to do what you want. Hours and hours later, still
trying to get it to work.

Don't get me wrong, it will install without a hitch, but to do anything
constructive, you need hours and hours.

Hmmm, I had mine up and working, tweaked, updated and producing in less
than two hours.

No, you need a brain and know where to ask questions if you run into
something your brain cannot understand.

Thats it. Even with a Brain, which I have and you don't, it takes hours to
find what you are looking for. Even if you ask a question, it could take
hours or days for someone to respond. Not every question is answered right
away. Do you need to spend more time in newsgroups? Have you ever noticed
even in the vista group that not every question gets answered right away?

Something your brain can't understand.

Bull crap, not if you know how to use a search tool. Depending on the
Distro, Linux can in fact be easier to setup, as many ovthe last couple
years have really polished installers that will guide you (but not
restrict you) though the process, and allow you to select each component
by hand, or choose from default configurations that give you a good
start based on what you plan to use the system for primarily.

That said, sometimes Vista installation and activation works as
described in the original post, but keep in mind sometimes it does not
go as smoothly. In my experience it can be a very hit-or-miss matter,
especially when dealing with changed hardware, especially the
motherboard. XP also had issues with that but I never really had so many
issues with that as we've constantly been running into with Vista.

It is nice when everything just works, regaurdless of what you are
running.

I don't use news groups to find an answer for Ubuntu any more. I have a
friend who is an expert and I email him. He usually answers within a
couple of hours.
