Vista problems solved

Michael

I have posted for assistance a number of times over the last couple of
months asking for help having upgraded from XP - using a full install
version and selecting to overwrite XP.

The problems I was having related to generally minor problems - but
sufficiently annoying ones - such as the computer would not shut down /
would reboot all of it's own / other little bits and bobs not running
as expected and so on.

Last week, my motherboard fried and I ended up having to build a new
system. I had to reinstall Vista as it assumed I had a new machine
(which I had) and so I chose a clean install this time.

Since then, all my Vista problems have gone and the system runs as
sweet as a nut.

It's either because XP is not running underneath - or - there were
issues with various drivers and such that caused the bugs I was
suffering.
I was pleased to see that Vista made a copy of my old XP system for me
and neatly kept it available under system.old - so I could go and
recover .pst and other files required to put various programs back to
where they were before.

For all those like me who were suffering various issues having put
Vista over XP -it just may be worth considering a clean install.

There is another possibility you have overlooked ... short of a voltage
surge or other traumatic incident, motherboards rarely "fry" over the course
of seconds or minutes. It is possible, perhaps even probable, that your
motherboard has been ailing for some time and causing problems.

You mentioned that it's nice that Vista made a copy of your XP so you could
recover your .pst files. What would happen if your hard drive died? Do you
have backups of all your pst files, your documents, pictures, etc...?
Doesn't sound like it.

Make sure to get a good backup solution in order because it's not IF your
hard drive will die, it's WHEN.

I think Richard has the answer here. Vista will load easily over XP
normally.

Yes do backup. Put your pst file in a folder under Documents for easy
backup. After you move it, you will have to open Outlook, File> Open>
Outlook Data File....

You are right - my MoBo didn't just stop suddenly, I had power issues
for a couple of weeks - odd times when the computer refused to come
out to play - and may be this was the issue all along - but - the
issues I was suffering were the same as many others - so I would be
surprised (not totally though) if the MoBo power issue was the sole
cause of the problems I and others have experienced.

It's simply an observation that a clean install (albeit on a new MoBo)
has cleared the problems.
In truth i will never be able to say why exactly - too many variables
that cannot be tested - but it may help someone else to try
reinstalling Vista as a clean install as opposed to an upgrade.

Your point is quite valid though.

I had a backup routine running weekly in Vista -to a separate drive.
Backup was somehow corrupted.
