Vista Offline File

Hi All,

Has any experienced issues with offline files.

1. A folder and all subfolders and files have been marked as offline. They
show they are marked offline.
2. The folder is marked with Offline Availability: Always available, but the
files in each of the folders say Offline Availability: Not Available even
though when you right click on the file it is ticked to make available
offline.

When I am offline I can go through the folders as if I am online, but if I
click on any of the files to open, I get an error message that the file is
not available.

Thanks
Dean

Same here. Except that whem I'm connected to the file server, I get a message
"Access Denied" whenever I try to open a file that has been made available
offline. Other files can be opened without any problem. The second and any
consecutive sync attempt fails.

Any suggestions?

Sorry to respond so late to you both--I missed this earlier.

Try checking to see whether your cache is full. It sounds like a folder was
pinned but the pin operation on some child items was unable to complete. To
check for cache space availability, open the "Offline Files" control panel
applet. Select the "Disk Usage" page. The page indicates the current space
usage in the cache and provides a way for a local administrator to adjust
the maximum usage limit.

The Offline Files CPL applet is listed under the "Networking and Internet"
category in the categorized control panel.

Nope. All offline files: 205MB, limit 20.7GB. Temporary offline files: 152kB,
limit 20.9GB.

Available disk space on the drive containing the offline cache: 26,7GB

Jill,

My response is the same as Frank's. Also when I try to mark the folders as
offline I get sync errors now that "The process cannot access the file
because it is currently being used by another process."

Noone else uses these folders other than me???

Thanks

This thread appears to be dead, which is quite a shame. I've reposted the
question as "Vista offline folders - access denied". I've got a Technet Plus
subscription so it *should* bee answered within two working days.

There are two cases where we've seen this error:

The folder is redirected (and thus cached) and hasn't completed syncing.
The backend server is a NAS device with an incompatible version of SAMBA.

Do either of these apply to you? I'm in the middle of troubleshooting this
same issue with another customer on a different newsgroup. Unfortunately the
two cases above don't apply to him. One developer suggested disabling AV
software to see if that's the issue.

I don't have a good answer at this point.

If that is the case, is this the right place to ask? Doesn't TechNet
have its own location?

PS These are questions not statements.

Hi,
I have same problem. Offline Files worked fine two-three days but then
I started to receive "Access Denied" during sync and I do not have
access to files/folders even it is my private folder on file server -
all files/folders were created by me. When I tried to disable "Always
Available" I get sync error "Access Denied". I managed to access files
only after I disabled Offline Files feature. I tried deleting cacshe
folder and recreating it again (http://www.errorforum.com/microsoft-
windows-vista-error/3359-moving-offline-files-cache-windows-
vista.html) but didn't help. I can't make offline any file any more. I
tried with different server - same results.

The first is true, the latter isn't, the server is Windows 2003 SP1. But the
sync never finishes because of the access denied errors, so it's a vicious
circle I'm in.

In my system log on Vista's end, I do see some unexpected errors about at
the time I try to sync:

- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
- <System>
<Provider Name="Tcpip" />
<EventID Qualifiers="32768">4226</EventID>
<Level>3</Level>
<Task>0</Task>
<Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords>
<TimeCreated SystemTime="2007-02-14T20:17:57.923Z" />
<EventRecordID>5960</EventRecordID>
<Channel>System</Channel>
<Computer>mycomputer</Computer>
<Security />
</System>
- <EventData>
<Data />

<Binary>00000000010000000000000082100080000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000</Binary>
</EventData>
</Event>

Which basically means the built-in connection limit of the TCP/IP stack is
biting me. I don't have any proof it's actually killing the sync or something
else, but it is suspicious anyway. I'm not doing anything else that I'm aware
of.

Oh, and I do not have any anti-virus software active on both server and
client.

Strange -- if I'd paid to have a TechNet Plus subscription I'd expect a
dedicated service! <s>

It seems that I am experiencing the same problem here.

I have upgraded my Laptop from XP to Vista Business about a month ago and
started using offline folders and files instantly (for both my private
documents which are stored on the server (Windows 2003 SBS) and other common
files which are accessed by all company users).

It worked fine until some days ago when I started to get "Access denied"
messaged upon sync.

I have checked my authorizations on the server (just to make sure) and I
have full access to all files and folders.

There is also more than enough disc space allocated in the "Offline Files"
settings

I have also tried to reset the CSC, which didn't help either.

I have even reinstalled Windows Vista last night and for testing created a
new folder containing one Word document on the network share. Then I ried to
make it available offline which resulted in the fact that the folder was
marked available, but the file (although showing the sync symbol) was not
available offline.

I can delete the file, but am unable to open it unless I deactivate offline
files at all, restart and only use it online.

Synchronization worked fine with Win XP ... :-(

Thanks in advance for any solution!

Hi Dean
Similar probs, bit more info that may help
Vista Ultimate on new notebook connected to SBS2003 SP1
I have had issued with "The new improved" offline files.
I have just over 3GB of redirected My Docs and other offline files that I
have been carrying around and happily synching with XP.
I bought a new n/b with vistaU/M and the following occurred
Vista behind the scenes, ignoring the synch centre completely, copies these
files in their entirety every 15 mins or so driving our network hard in the
process (65-80% on 100Mb) and keeping the hard drive very busy.
Reducing the offline content to a few small files does not stop it but at
least the system gets a breather.
The kicker is even after using the synch centre and making sure it has
synched, the files are not usable offline, they are there, the folder says
they are available offline but they are not when you go to open them.
Removing and re enabling offline cache did nothing either.
Disabling offline files stops the traffic.

After complete format and reinstall no better.
I have put vista on shelf for a while and installed XP Pro on same hardware.
Synching works fine now as do all the other bits and pieces and my files are
available off line.

We are working with a couple customers to troubleshoot this problem. I'll
post back when I have some news.

Hi All
Has there been any progress on resolving the offline file issue that Vista has
I really would like to run it but I need my offline files actually available
offline, and cannot put up with the network traffic Vista is generating with
the background synching.
FWIW
I really miss the ability to auto synch during log off as that assured me I
had most recent copies offline.

No answers yet, but I have two developers researching two customer problems
right now, so I hope to have news soon.

Some more info for you.
On our system XP uses approx 2-2.5Mbps of 100Mbps N/W to Synch
Vista uses 65-80Mbps of 100Mbps and seems to be copying the files completely
each time.
Set up a new test server win2k3SBS R2 and a test wstn with same file 3GB
redirected My Docs load
Once it has done the laborious synch Vista has the files avail offline Yaah.
Each time the user logs on the copy process starts over hogging bandwidth.
