Vista not installing anymore. Help...

I have previously installed windows vista beta 2 on my computer at home,
which I then uninstalled a couple of weeks after I installed it.

I recently downloaded the RC1 version of vista and wanted to install this on
my computer. I burned the image to the disc and inserted the disc into the
drive. I originally started doing an upgrade to my windows xp version, but
decided half way through to cancel that and do a fresh install.

However, when I come to load the driver for the SATA drives, it can find
them ok, but comes up with an error loading the driver, which it did not when
I did the upgrade path route.

I therefore, decided to install beta 2, which as I previously stated has
been installed successfully before. This time is loaded the correct driver
successfully, however, when it came to the installing updates part of the
install, it completes and ticks the item, but then I get this error:

"An error occurred while preparing Windows Setup to boot into next stage of
Setup"

and states that the installation has been cancelled.

I'm at a total loss as I have installed vista beta 2 before. I have tried
using the disc I originally burned and the disc I received from Microsoft,
both with no luck. I have two 160gb discs in a raid array, which I have
deleted and recreated a number of times, but still no joy.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

Sounds like it's looking for a supporting driver for the RAID configuration.
Have you tried offering one from the motherboard manufacturer at the point
where you choose the installation volume? Drivers changed considerably
between builds, and beta2 may have initially supported it whereas RC1 does
not. Also, a WinXP driver from the existing installation may have been used
before and so one was not required when upgrading.

As to beta2 faulting during setup, that happened on my RAID a number of
times even with the right driver. Installation was haphazard at best and
setup certainly not reliable.

If you have an Intel board with the Intel SATA controller, this is a known
bug in Build 5600 (some sort of name conflict with the Intel drivers). It
is fixed in subsequent builds.

A workaround is to install a minimal XP system (doing the F6 thing to
install the SATA drivers), then upgrade to Vista 5600 from that. Best
solution is to install Vista 5744, if you can get hold of it.
