Vista Lockups - Where do I check?

I have been having frequent lockups recently with my Vista Ultimate (x86)
system. At times Vista will come up without keyboard & mouse; at times it
will go through login and then lock up as various startup programs are
loaded and at times it will work for a while and then my cursor will freeze
and I cannot do anything but reboot.

I am using a wireless mouse & keyboard but I do not think this is the
issue - I completetly changed batteries after the last time. I have checked
my drives (chkdsk /f) and they are fine - no errors. I have checked my
memory with a tool called Memtest 86+ - no problems.

Is there some place where I can find the program/event that is leading to
the lockup?

Thanks for any help.

Does your Wireless/Mouse use a common ( Single ) receiver or are there
individual ones for each ? How do the receivers connect to the PC ? By
USB or PS/2 connections ? Do you use the built-in drivers for them or a
specific vendor package ? ( Logitech SetPoint 3.3 or Intellipoint ) ?
If USB are you plugging the Mouse/Keyboard into a physical PC socket
or a USB expansion hub. From your description you may have issues with
either Hub power consumption of excessive bandwidth on the Controller.

Sorry for litany of questions, but Wireless interface devices can be a pain
to setup with Radio channels, Security encryption.....

No problem. The questions are all relevant.

I am using a MS Optical Desktop Elite with the latest Intellipoint software
for both mouse and KB (6.1) on a Vista Ultimate (x86) system with 2GB RAM.
When I was having the problems, I was connecting to the PS2 ports for KB and
mouse using the USB to PS2 converter that came with the system. I am now
trying it as straight USB (one connection only) to see if that makes a
difference. It is connected directly into the PC - not a hub. Setup now: 1
receiver attached to 1 USB port.

I only mentioned the wireless setup originally since I had no KB and mouse
on a few occasions when I got to login screen. I have no idea if that is the
problem or the only problem. This is a relatively new install as I recently
reinstalled from scratch due to a crash. (The crash turned out to be due to
faulty memory that I had just installed. That memory has since been replaced
and tested thoroughly.)

So far - I have not had the issue today (i.e. since switching to straight
USB).
