lockups in WoW under windows Vista

Has anyone started to experience occasional lockups while playing World of
Warcraft? Mine seem to have started right after the the most recent patch
tuesday. The lockups last about 5-10 seconds and are a complete freeze of the
game interface. Sound effects start looping while it is locked up. This is
not the typical server disconnect issue, but appears to be in the game
interface.

I'm running Windows Vista Business (that's microsoft's name for the product;
I call it "Windows Incompatible Piece of Crap"). Before I start rolling back
patches to try diagnose the problem, I wanted to see if anyone else has
experienced this, or if it's a WoW issue and not Vista's fault (very
unlikely, but it does happen).

Sounds like a hard drive grind lockup. Is the hdd activity light on whilst
it does this? Sounds pretty likely especially with the resource hog vista
is.

Doesn't appear to be a hard-drive related issue. When the problem happens, I
can Alt-Esc or Ctrl-Esc to other processes. Everything else is running fine
-- it's only WoW that's locked up.

I'm now running resource monitor and task manager on my second monitor; I
hope to see on one of them what's going on when the problem happens.

All was fine until this week (coincidentally around patch tuesday when
microsoft inflicts new patches on us unsuspecting Vista users)

I am on normal Windows XP and since the last patch I tend to lock up
when entering AV..
I locks for 8-10 seconds and then sometimes unlocks and away we
go.. On other occasions I cant even ctrl alt del the process and have
to restart my pc... Is this a common issue or again does the fault lie
with my PC.. I never had any issues before the last patch..
Thanks in advance for any advice..

I experienced problems while using the ATI X800. I find ATI simply sucks. I
had a X700 before that. I moved to a 7600GT and wow, what difference in
quality and performance. No problems yet with the new card. Windows Vista
32Bit

The "rolling sound clip" error has occurred in almost every PC game
under the sun for someone, in almost every Windows operating system
under the sun. :) I started doing help desk work for Gateway 2k back
when Windows 3.11 was the flavor of the month. And have worked in the
computer industry in some form or fashion since then. From Help Desk,
Network Admin, System Admin to my current job as a Software Engineer.

This error is almost always caused by a Video and/or Sound driver
update.

Check your drivers, roll them back or update them as need be.

I currently have Vista Home Premium that runs WoW perfectly as well as
an XP Pro machine that runs in perfectly.

If WoW goes back to normal operation after this, then yes, I have
experienced this, with Windows XP though, not Vista. And its been
happening for quite some time. I have updated drivers. I have
disabled programs. I have even reinstalled WoW from nothing. None of
it has worked to fix the problem. I've come to learn to live with it,
but its still very very very annoying to get this lock up, then come
back to find yourelf dead, or your healer died and you're about to
wipe.

My solution to get around this issue was to use my fiancee's laptop,
which was running Vista and as of yet has never had this issue.
Instead of a lock up, VIsta decided in the middle of the final boss
fight for Old Hillsbrad to restart and install updates. Never asked
me if I wanted to, it just did it with no warning. I was unhappy.

I had the total lock-ups since switching to Vista around 3 months ago. but,
as kerri mentioned, the non-total, freeze-and-release issues only started a
few days ago.
