Vista installation

Trying to upgrade(not a clean install) to Vista RC1 from XP on a Dell 2600
with 20 gig HD, 786 ram.
It goes through the install to "Completing upgrade" then hangs there(has
been there for over an hour now). If I hit the escape key I get a warning
that says"Install Windows...Setup cannot be cancelled at this point. Doing
so could leave your computer in a potentially unstable state".
Any suggestions on how to get out of this or how long I should wait before
shutting it down?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I think I've noticed other people here saying that an upgrade sometimes takes
several hours. After reading that I went for a clean install from 5600 to
5728. You best go to bed and leave it running. Hopefully it will be finished
by breakfast time! Colin

Thanks for the response. I waited overnight (about6 hours) and still the
same.I restarted the comp and it restored itself to before installation
began. I think I'll try a clean install next.
